Abstract:

Critical thinking is one of the most important skills for children and young people of the 21st century. By extension, the development of critical thinking is a key objective for modern education systems. Critical thinking as a concept is particularly complex as it requires and involves a set of cognitive processes such as comparing sources, synthetic thinking, justifying and formulating logical conclusions. For this reason, the development of critical thinking at school level is carried out through the interdisciplinary and detailed elaboration of multiple scientific sources that will lead to the final educational product. In many cases, the development of critical thinking is combined with other important skills 21st century skills as the topics processed extend to such thematic areas. This dissertation deals with the development of critical thinking through the processing of European citizenship issues. More specifically, children are invited to study on climate change and express their opinion on the measures developed by the European Union to address it. Similarly, to study and critically express on the European Union’s strategy to inform young people about the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence.  The development of teaching scenarios to address European citizenship issues is carried out through the use of digital media, such as robotics, digital storytelling and virtual reality. The main research question that arises is to what extent the processing of European citizenship issues using digital sources contributes to the development of critical thinking of primary school students.
